Key Stage 4: Courtroom Workshops

These thought-provoking courtroom workshops explore a contemporary criminal or historical criminal case.

Students will:

• Explore the roles in a courtroom
• Prepare and enact a trial based on a real contemporary case
• Discuss and debate real sentencing options
• Learn about the law and justice system and consequences of breaking the law
• Be encouraged to use their rights and responsibilities to be become more active citizens

Contemporary Themes:

Hate Crime – The 19 year old defendant is accused of posting grossly offensive and racist material on her Instagram account

Cyberbullying – The defendant is 15 years old and charged with Harassment, sending abusive Facebook posts and threatening to harm the victim.

Knife Crime – A 17 year old has been charged with murder, that he caused the death of his friend by a single stab wound.  The court will decide whether the charge should be murder or manslaughter.

Historical Themes:

Suffragettes- The defendant a suffragette is charged with maliciously damaging a painting in the National Gallery.

Brighton Trunk Murders – The defendant is charged with murder.  His victim had been killed by a blow to the head and been hidden in a trunk

Days/Times: Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays Morning 10am to 12noon Afternoon 1pm to 3pm
