Crime Club: Women in Victorian Prisons

This month, Crime Club turns its attention to the women who passed through our gaol, exploring the stories of local female prisoners and the crimes that brought them into the Victorian justice system. How were women treated in Victorian prisons during an era of hard labour, strict discipline and reform?

But what of the women on the other side of the bars? We will also uncover the lives of the women who worked as prison keepers and their responsible for maintaining order.

Discover the stories of Victorian female criminals, the punishments they endured, and the women tasked with keeping them in line.
