Refugee Roots Takeover

This Refugee Week, the National Justice Museum is hosting a whole-day museum takeover with Refugee Roots to celebrate the launch of the Museum’s new Sanctuary Cell and the beautiful Welcome Mat created during collaborative art sessions with refugee and asylum-seeking communities throughout the year, led by artist Ismail Khokon.

Come along to take part in art and craft; visit the Sanctuary Cell and find out more about what ‘justice’ means for those seeking asylum.

Throughout the day, there will be various activities, refreshments and food as well as tours to the immigration cell and exhibition viewing.

Tours and creative workshop/ lunch are free, and all are welcome; booking is required.

10:30am – 11:15am Tour around the National Justice Museum - Booking required as numbers are limited.

11am – 12:30pm – Drop-in creative workshop – booking required

12:30pm – 1:30pm – Lunch and come explore our upcoming exhibition – 30 Objects of Justice.

1:30pm – 3pm - Drop-in creative workshop – booking required

2:30pm – 3:15pm - Tour around the National Justice Museum - Booking required as numbers are limited.

Welcome Mat

Commissioned by the National Justice Museum, this collaborative artwork was created by artist Ismail Khokon in partnership with Refugee Roots and participants from refugee and asylum-seeking communities in Nottingham. Over a number of co-creation sessions, individuals came together to share their stories, explore their journeys, and reflect on their feelings towards the UK.

The result is our Welcome Mat — a large-scale, mixed-media piece now permanently installed in the Museum’s Migration Cell. Through photography, storytelling, and hands-on artmaking, participants contributed their voices and visions to a powerful collective expression of resilience, identity, and hope.
