Step into the Shadows

Explore, Reflect, Create: Mark-Making in the Cells

Step into the shadows. Step into the stories.

Step into the cells of the National Justice Museum, a place where echoes of the past still speak.

In this workshop, you’ll begin your journey in the museum’s historic Georgian and Victorian cells, spaces once used to hold those awaiting justice. As you move through these powerful environments, you’ll be invited to look closely, feel deeply, and respond creatively using graphite, soft pastels, and light sources to capture your impressions through mark-making.

These first marks are raw, instinctive, and personal, a creative response to a space full of history, tension, and emotion.

Then, in our welcoming workshop space, you’ll come together with others to share reflections, discuss your creative choices, and explore how your marks connect with wider themes: power, punishment, resistance, justice, and humanity. You'll choose one drawing to develop further using waterbased colour, guided by a Visual artist Ismail Khokon.
