The Worn Self

Working with artist Michelle Reader, you’ll design a badge or personal adornment made from found and recyclable materials - something that can shift or adjust to reflect your current state of being and express something about your inner world.

Good-conduct badges, such as the one in our 30 Objects Representing Justice exhibition, were introduced by prison reformer Elizabeth Fry to reward good behaviour during a prison sentence.  Inspired by this and other forms of insignia – from the skills badges earned in the scouting movement to the patches and markers that signal our favourite causes and communities - this workshop reimagines the badge as a living marker of selfhood.

Through simple sculptural techniques, we’ll select and transform discarded fragments to create playful, thoughtful symbols.  Each participant will leave with a unique, personal emblem: a small work of art assembled from fragments of story and self
