Words of Reformation

Inspired by the records of the documents for the London Female Preventative and Reformatory in our current exhibition 30 Objects Representing Justice, and reflecting our previous exhibition Asking For It, this workshop will have you embroider a slogan sampler.

Cross-stitch samplers were used in the 19th Century to teach girls the skills needed to be wives, mothers and domestic servants.  They often included a moral phrase and were very rigid in their design.

Following the modern use of embroidery for protest, we will design and embroider a piece of art that reflects how society sees a woman’s place in the 21st Century.
