Curriculum-linked learning in authentic spaces for KS1
At the National Justice Museum in Nottingham, our inspirational educational visits use real courtrooms, museum spaces and objects to help pupils gain a hands-on understanding of the law and justice.
With curriculum-linked programmes for primary schools, we tell the story of law and order across five floors of diverse and intriguing exhibits.
Our 18th-century Grade II listed building provides a perfect setting for learning. It has two authentic Victorian courtrooms, an 800-year-old prison complete with original Georgian cells, an exercise yard, and medieval dungeons.
Characters in Court
This fun, interactive courtroom workshop introduces students to the courts by putting a fictional character on trial in an authentic courtroom. Students will:
- Learn about the law and justice system
- Explore the roles in a courtroom
- Be encouraged to think about what is right, what is wrong and the consequences of their choices
- Discuss and debate to reach a verdict and decide the sentence
Local History
Nottingham is steeped in history, and the National Justice Museum is no exception. Our building houses a Victorian courtroom, a Georgian gaol, and cells that date back hundreds of years. This session takes place in Narrow Marsh, a recreation of a typical street in Victorian Nottingham - an area not included in a standard Museum tour. Students will:
- Explore Victorian Nottingham in the Narrow Marsh exhibition and take part in different activities
- Compare the difference between the past and the present on topics such as work, shopping and play
Police Object Handling Experience
We have an extraordinary collection of over 40,000 items from the history of crime and punishment. In this interactive session, students will:
- Get to grips with police related artefacts from our collection in an interactive object handling activity designed for Key Stage 1.
- Learn about different materials and what they could be used for
- Design their own piece of police equipment.
Cave Detectives
Explore the historic caves under the streets of Nottingham. Learn about the people who lived there and how the caves were used at different times throughout history. Students will:
- Explore a unique set of historically significant caves with one of our expert guides.
- Learn how the way people have used the caves has changed over time from the 1400’s through to the 1940’s
