Interview with a volunteer - Paula
16/04/2025
‘I love giving back to the community and seeing participants being creative and happy whilst doing their session’.
Why did you want to start volunteering, and why the National Justice Museum?
I have been volunteering at the Museum since the autumn of 2024. I am a decorative artist and textile designer, and as part of my creative development, I feel it is important to support art projects in my local area. The National Justice Museum has both a historic value in Nottingham and engages its visitors with immersive learning experiences around the topic of justice and with new and upcoming artists. Supporting the art projects occurring in this place is an honour.
What do you do as a volunteer?
As a Creative Workshops volunteer, I support the ‘Make It Yours’ creative workshops. I assist the Creative Engagement Curator and the artist with delivering the logistics of the session. I welcome participants, ensuring that everything is set up. I also do ad-hoc tasks throughout the session and help clear up at the end.
‘Make It Yours’ are our free creative workshops, led by artists, makers and writers, all influenced by our unique museum. To book upcoming workshops, please go to our website: What's on | National Justice Museum
What is your favourite thing about your volunteering?
I have volunteered for many years in many different capacities. Aligning my volunteer work with my artistic skills is helping me learn about new artists and develop my knowledge. I also love giving back to the community and seeing participants being creative and happy whilst doing their session. It ignites my passion for art as you can see that transformative power in others and yourself.
What is your favourite object or exhibition at the Museum?
My favourite thing is the current photography exhibition ‘Picture This: Hope’, made by the public and artists. This was an equitable project and very inclusive, and a great way to share everyone’s lenses.
