The Soil Beyond The Sentence

Join Nottingham’s Nature Poet Laureate, Cara Thompson, for a poetry workshop exploring the unique experience of the natural world from confinement.

Drawing on archival images and artefacts depicting prisoners working on farms and in nature from the National Justice Museums’ ‘Working Through It’ exhibition, participants will explore the complex relationship between imprisonment, labour, freedom, and the natural world.

Through observation, discussion, and guided writing exercises, we will respond creatively to these historical materials, uncovering the human (and non-human) stories they might contain.

Together, we will consider how our relationship with nature can take on new significance when viewed through the lens of confinement and explore how these nature encounters can spark our own imagination.
